Councils are determined to help tackle violence against women and girls (VAWG) in our local communities, and work alongside police, the NHS, and charities to make sure we do all we can to protect women and girls from all forms of abuse.
Responding to the Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy, Cllr Nesil Caliskan, Chair of the LGA’s Safer and Stronger Communities Board, said:
“Councils are determined to help tackle violence against women and girls (VAWG) in our local communities, and work alongside police, the NHS, and charities to make sure we do all we can to protect women and girls from all forms of abuse.
“We are pleased to see the Government has acted on recommendations to introduce a National Policing Lead for tackling violence against women and girls but to embed change across all communities, a cross-Government approach is crucial moving forward.
“The announcement of a national communications campaign focused on raising awareness and creating behaviour change, along with increased investment into prevention are positive, and we are pleased to see that there will be better support for teachers to deliver the Relationship, Sex and Health Education curriculum.
“It is good that local authorities will be able to bid into the Safety of Women at Night Fund, but in order to ensure that we effectively tackle violence against women and girls, the strategy must be matched with adequate resources and long term funding.”
