Local government plays a critical role in delivering sport and fitness activities and maintaining the UK’s leisure infrastructure. It is fantastic to see so many places reopening and welcoming back their communities.

Baroness Blake responds to a new law which received Royal Assent today, requiring schools to follow new statutory guidance on uniform costs, which will ensure prices are kept down.

Baroness Grey-Thompson, currently an LGA Vice-President, will succeed outgoing President Lord Kerslake and will be formally elected at the LGA’s General Assembly in July.

“We support the ambition to increase recycling and eliminate all avoidable waste by 2050."

The LGA is calling for councils to be given powers in a Planning Bill in the Queen’s Speech to incentivise developers to build housing more quickly.

"All of us in local government, across the political divide, want to see the Queen’s Speech finally set out the plans we have been waiting for and make good on the Prime Minister’s promise to ‘fix social care’, once and for all."

The LGA is calling on the Government to use the Queen’s Speech to bring forward “turbo-charged” proposals for devolution that give all councils across country the power to meet the challenges and opportunities facing their communities over the coming decade.

"We are pleased to see the reintroduction of the Environment Bill. The legacy of the COVID-19 pandemic must be that we grasp the opportunity to protect and enhance our natural environment and tackle the climate emergency."

“Keeping people safe online while ensuring their rights, such as freedom of expression, are protected is crucial and we are pleased that the Online Safety Bill introduces measures to manage this."

"This Bill cannot come soon enough to reform our broken building safety system and enshrine tough new legislation into law."
