Wigan is one of 10 local authorities in Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership. Local integration is taking place in the context of the locality plan ‘Further, Faster’ and ‘The Deal 2030’, Wigan’s ambitious plan for the borough.

There are four local vaccination centres in the Wigan borough. Two are run from leisure centres, one from a community centre and the fourth at a conference centre. A local pharmacy has also recently started providing vaccinations recently.

Wigan Council has developed a pioneering approach to public sector reform known as The Deal. It is a new way of working differently with communities and stakeholders with both sides working collaboratively to improve the borough. When commissioning its sexual health service, this model shaped how the council transformed its approach. This case study forms part of our sexual health resource.

Wigan commissions leisure services to provide an integrated health and wellbeing offering which makes full use of the community assets that families trust most - schools and Start Well Family Centres - as well as providing weight management services for children and young people.

Westminster City Council are piloting a scheme in schools to improve access to early information and support for children on mental health as well as ensuring there are mental health workers in youth hubs.

West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership is working to ensure that people who have been affected by suicide can help to shape the training, support and resources on offer. One project has been looking to reduce the risk of suicide within West Yorkshire’s Gypsy and Traveller community.

West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership (HCP) covers 2.6 million people. It is made up of around 50 local health and care networks, eight local authority areas, seven local care partnerships and six place plans (Bradford District and Craven, Calderdale, Harrogate, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield). West Sussex Council’s substance misuse service has set up a dedicated family team to help ensure the needs of children whose parents are under the care of the team are properly catered for.

This case study is an example of the practical use of asset-based approaches in communities.

Wealden District Council has set up a range of initiatives to combat loneliness. It has worked with pubs to run events, held dementia-friendly cinema screenings and adult education courses in community venues, such as village halls and libraries. This case study shows how district councils have improved the health of their local areas.
