Supporting small and medium enterprises: The role of councils

This discussion paper explores and identifies what councils can do to support small businesses to grow and help local authorities to consider how they can use lessons learned from elsewhere to improve their support of SMEs. It sets out why SMEs are important to the national economy and explores the role of councils in economic development.

The challenges facing SMEs are discussed and case studies of local authority schemes, aimed at supporting SMEs and exploring the lessons learned and the impact of these interventions, are featured.

Tips to on how councils can improve their support of SMEs are also included.
