Area based reviews

Last July the Government announced a national programme of area reviews, which have wide implications for local areas. The programme of reviews, covering further education and sixth form colleges, is taking place in waves, and is due to completed by end of March 2017.

The Work and Health Programme

The Work and Health Programme, announced in the Spending Review (November 2015), will support claimants with health conditions or disabilities and those unemployed for over two years.

Three million apprenticeships: local government's contribution

The Government has committed to creating three million new apprenticeships in this Parliament, with two primary measures to achieve this ambition – a public sector target and an Apprenticeship Levy. Local authorities will be subject to both. The LGA is seeking councils' views.

LGA proposal to support disadvantaged jobseekers into work

Winter weather Survey 2015

The survey was conducted by the LGA's Research and Information team in October-November 2015 in order to gather information about local authorities' plans and preparations in case of severe weather, to help LGA's lobbying of central government and to highlight the scale of authorities' efforts.

Oxford Economics was commissioned by the LGA to produce a report researching long-term trends in, and prospects for, UK trade & investment, with particular reference to the role of England's city-regions in generating exports and attracting investment.


Combined authorities legislation reform

The LGA has responded to DCLG's consultation on a draft Legislative Reform Order to implement changes to the legislation related to combined authorities and economic prosperity boards.


Autumn Statement 2014 – On-the-day briefing

The Chancellor has confirmed that local services will not face additional cuts in 2015/16. The Government has therefore acknowledged the huge contribution councils have already made to balance the country's books and the fragile financial position in which this has placed many local authorities.
