The great strength of the LGA is
that it is regarded as a practical and
pragmatic organisation that seeks to
reach consensus between all parties
on those issues that impact on local
government, and it needs to retain the
respect of all those involved in order
to succeed and survive.
I support Cllrs Sheard and Marjoram
(first 541) in their defence of the
Planning Inspectorate. But there is
a more fundamental issue with the
planning system: at its heart is a
market mechanism.
I was delighted to take part in a
new venture for the LGA, putting a
question live to LGA Chairman Sir
Merrick Cockell [during a phone-in on
the Budget].
As stated in ‘On the frontline' (first
537), it is difficult to attract younger
councillors because of the time
commitment required by the role and
its low remuneration.
Diminishing council funding is
leading to more ‘marketisation' of
public services, to the detriment of
communities and the diminution of
local democratic mandates.
Slower road speeds are popular.
Speed limits of 20 mph offer safer
streets, quality living and are key to
increasing physical activity. They also
benefit traders through higher footfall
and profits.
