The Local Government Association (LGA) together with the Youth Justice Board (YJB) are holding a conference on Youth offending: the future for resettlement and accountability on Thursday 21 October at Local Government House, Smith Square, London.
Young people who offend, especially those who end up in custody, are ironically amongst the most vulnerable in our society. Up to 49% of young people in the youth justice system are or have been in care and similar levels have been abused. It is therefore safe to assume that safeguarding issues and reducing reoffending through better resettlement interventions are inextricably linked.
If we are to improve the life chances of children and young people coming out of custody and reduce the likelihood of their reoffending, children's services and youth justice services have to work together across agency and local authority boundaries to deliver workable solutions.
This conference aims to bring together those who plan, deliver and are accountable for these services to see what is currently being achieved and engage in the dialogue about what more can be done to ensure the wellbeing of this high risk group and make a major contribution to community safety.
Confirmed speakers so far include:
- Maggie Atkinson, Children's Commissioner for England
- Frances Done, Chair of the Youth Justice Board
- Chris Wright, National Director, Catch 22
