"We have to meet the challenge of climate change to establish energy security and to create new jobs, new export opportunities and shared prosperity. This will require a radical transformation of the British economy, society -in fact all of us; local and central government, devolved administrations, local communities, Whitehall and Westminster, have a role to play. We can only meet this challenge by working together." - Rt Hon Chris Huhne MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, speech at the Local Government Group annual conference 2010

Councils are in a unique position to help meet the national target of 80% reduction in CO2 by 2050.  The coalition's programme for government makes a clear commitment to 'a radical devolution of power and greater financial autonomy'. In such a resource constrained environment:

  • How does local government respond to the new challenges and opportunities this will bring, while at the same time reducing our emissions and adapting to climate change?
  • What should we ask of ourselves as a sector, and what support will we require?

This one day Local Government Group event offers you the opportunity to hear about the big picture and specific areas of opportunity for councils from leaders in the sector, and national politicians, experts and campaigners.  You will also have the opportunity to debate directly with leaders in the Local Government Group what it should be doing to advance the policy agenda nationally and support you in your local work.

Speakers include:

  • Cllr Richard Kemp, Deputy Chairman, Local Government Association
  • Alexis Rowell, Founder, cuttingthecarbon
  • Ben Page, Chief Executive, Ipsos MORI
  • Cllr Andrew Cooper, Kirklees Council
  • Rob Whiteman, Executive Director, Local Government Improvement and Development
