Bin men, street sweepers and park staff have joined council efforts to clear streets and pavements during the freezing weather, while others are calling in on elderly residents to provide extra blankets and heating advice. Tens of thousands of tonnes of salt was spread across the nation's roads over the weekend as gritting teams fought through the blizzards to clear the main routes. And though the snow may have thawed, with sub-zero temperatures and ice predicted for the rest of the week, people are being urged to take extra care on the roads and look out for their neighbours.

Britain's archaic library laws need reform – LGA

Britain's archaic library laws risk stifling reform and limiting vital services for the poorest members of society, council leaders are warning on National Libraries Day. In its response to the Government's inquiry into library closures, the LGA warns that as long as local authorities are bound by the Public Libraries and Museums Act 1964 they will be hamstrung in their efforts to modernise services.

LGA response to Government's 'town team' pilots

Responding to the Government's announcement on ‘town team' pilots, Councillor Peter Box, Chair of the LGA's Economy and Transport Board, said: "Councils do of course appreciate any additional pot of funding which can help towards improving local high streets. However, we feel that this Government pilot simply tinkers around the edges. There have been two remarkably similar initiatives recently – the ‘High Street Recession fund' and the ‘High Street Riot fund', both of which also failed to give local partners the tools they need to make a real impact on the challenges high streets face..."
