10 questions to ask if you're scrutinising services for looked-after children

This guide has been produced by the Local Government Association in partnership with the National Children's Bureau. It follows on from a previous guide produced by the Centre for Public Scrutiny (CfPS) and forms part of a suite of offers for elected members and others working in children's services.

This guide aims to provide clear and succinct the key issues to cover in a scrutiny review of corporate parenting, as well as jargon-busting, links to further information and case studies.

The 10 question areas can be used by overview and scrutiny committees (OSCs) to scope a review that takes an overview of all services relevant to looked-after children, or to focus on an area of particular interest. They can also be used by corporate parenting groups or other elected members to support them in their ability to scrutinise and challenge the service provided by their council to looked-after children.
