This is in the context of NHS plans to re-tender its own clinical waste services which are likely to affect what it is willing to collect in the future, and hence also affect demand on clinical waste services provided by local authorities.

The survey was sent to all 353 local authorities in England and responses were received from 34 per cent.

The main findings were:

  • 76 per cent of respondents currently collected clinical waste from residents' homes;
  • The average collection cost among respondents was £42,000, and the average disposal cost was £19,000;
  • 5 per cent of respondents currently charged for collecting clinical waste from residents' homes.
