In November 2017 the LGA conducted a survey of lead members of public health in England to capture the thoughts of local leaders on public health delivered by their local authority.

This year's tenth LGA public health annual report reflects on 10 years of public health in local government and looks forward to the opportunities and challenges of the coming years.

Public health has always been a key consideration for alcohol policy. However, until recently, health authorities had little or no input into the licensing process. This briefing aims to place health bodies' new role in alcohol licensing in a strategic context, and to provide guidance to those who will be delivering the responsible authority role.

The overall aim of the research is to examine the extent to which developments since the Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 have improved outcomes for young people leaving care, particularly those with mental health issues.

It will also assist the NHS, community and voluntary sector and other partner agencies to understand the role and contribution of local government in supporting vulnerable people. This document identifies and collates key pieces of evidence about the cost effectiveness of prevention in order to develop the LGA's concept of a Prevention Transformation Fund. About 5 per cent of the entire healthcare budget is spent on prevention.

The LGA has developed a one day training workshop to enable elected members to champion health improvement and prevention in their communities.
