This guide sets out the vital information local leaders need to know about supporting young people’s mental health. A whole household approach to young people’s mental health recognises the important roles that parents, carers or siblings can play in supporting young people’s mental health.

This report explores how councils influence the mental wellbeing of our communities and how council services, from social care to parks to open spaces to education to housing, help to make up the fabric of mental health support for the people in our communities.

The LGA, NHS England and the Care Provider Alliance (CPA) have published this briefing paper for members of care providers' boards. This is aimed at supporting providers to apply the MCA in the right way and to help ensure that the legal rights of those who may lack capacity are upheld and that the individual is at the heart of decision-making.

The LGA, NHS England and the Care Provider Alliance have published a guide to the Mental Capacity Act. This is aimed at supporting care providers providing community services.  

This improvement tool has been has been developed throughout 2014/15 with funding from the Department of Health and support from the Local Government Association (LGA) and the Association of Directors of Social Services (ADASS).

This joint Local Government Association (LGA) and Association of Directors of Social Services (ADASS) research project was carried out between July and November 2014.

Mental health problems are on the increase, with a rising demand on services and increasing complexity of need. This was happening before COVID-19, but the pandemic has undoubtedly made the situation worse. Local government makes a vital contribution to promoting good mental health and need to continue to invest in this to ensure good mental health in their communities.

Suicide is a major issue for society and a leading cause of years of life lost. There were 5,021 deaths from suicide registered in England in 2018 and for every person who dies at least ten people are affected.
