Research and information - population and migration

The LGA has a number of streams of work around local demographics and populations, and in particular migration. By commissioning research and encouraging debate through workshops and conferences we are developing a local government proposition for medium and longer term strategies to get better nationally accredited local population estimates which can take account of the rapid changes brought about through international migration. We are also researching the impact of international migration on services and the community infrastructure, including the costs and the way these costs are covered.

This new resource guide on migration statistics has been written by the Institute for Employment Research at the University of Warwick on behalf of LGA Analysis and Research to assist local authorities and their partners develop local population and migration estimates and trends.

Future demographic trends in England

This latest research by the LGA examines recent and anticipated demographic trends in England. It uses data from the Office for National Statistics to explore the effects mortality, fertility and migration have had, and continue to have on the demographics on England. The report then goes on to summarise how this will be played out at a local level.
