We are committed to supporting current and future leaders, ensuring councillors and officers have the right skills to respond to current challenges and support local people and communities.

Political group offices

Our political support programmes include: 
 

  • The Councillors' Guide - a comprehensive guide to support new councillors and enable them to be as effective as possible in their new role.
  • Councillor induction - series of free events where new councillors can learn more about local government, its challenges and their role as a councillor. 
  • Local leadership - free materials and approaches to support local councillors in their community leadership role.
  • Change of control - five days free support from member peers for new leaders and cabinet members.
  • Effective Opposition - political support programmes for opposition councillors and groups.
  • Next Generation - prestigious political leadership programme for ambitious councillors - offered free to nominated members. 
  • Leadership Academy - three 2-day residential modules for leaders and those in leadership positions to learn the latest in political leadership. 
  • LC Leadership programme - intensive residential programme for leaders and chief executives. 
  • Peer mentoring - tailored support for individual councillors from experienced councillors with relevant expertise.
