Decisions and next steps on Feed-in Tariffs

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has made some key decisions on the review of the Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) for solar energy. The key decisions are:

  • From 3 March 2012 all installations on fewer than 25 buildings will receive 21p per kWh.
  • From 1 April 2012, properties installing solar panels will need to have achieved an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of band D or higher to receive the full tariff.
  • From 1 April 2012, where an individual or an organisation is receiving the FITs payments on more than 25 buildings, the tariff will be 20 per cent lower. This will be called a 'Multi-installation tariff'.

DECC have introduced phase 2 of their consultation on the Feed-in tariffs. Key proposals include:

  • Further reducing the tariff for solar energy in July, and regularly after that
  • Agreeing a definition for community projects, that could include social housing, to help these projects continue in light of the changes.

The briefing below sets out the key issues and the key areas of information the LGA is seeking to obtain in order to respond to Phase 2 of the consultation:
