Supporting enterprise in deprived areas

Deprived neighbourhoods are generally characterised by low rates of business start-up and survival, low levels of self-employment and high rates of unemployment. Stimulating business starts and supporting small business growth is one option for increasing employment opportunities for residents.

The Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI) programme, although now coming to an end, focused specifically on stimulating enterprise growth in deprived areas. Learning from the programme has been captured in two publications - a guide for councils and a collection of case studies.

Within these two publications we have captured good practice lessons for those local authorities and local enterprise partnerships who are considering enterprise growth initiatives in future.
