Support for corporate parents – Leeds

You are invited to attend a free half-day workshop to help you fulfil your responsibility as a corporate parent.

Start Time: 1.15 pm  
End Time: 3.45 pm

This is the fifth in a series of workshops aimed at supporting elected members fulfil their corporate parenting role. This event is targeted at the Yorkshire and Humber region. There are plans for further events in the South West, North West and London.

Who should attend?

  • lead members for children
  • council leaders
  • chairs of scrutiny committees and corporate parenting panels
  • directors of children's services
  • directors of public health.

Why you should attend

This workshop will help you to:

  • consider the current challenges facing corporate parents within new priorities and structural arrangements for local government.
  • share learning across councils about achievements and dilemmas in being an effective corporate parent.
  • consider practical ways for lead members and colleagues to assess the quality of their council's corporate parenting and to drive change.

1.30 pm: A model for effective corporate parenting – presentation
What does good corporate parenting look like? 
2.00 pm: Legal and policy context  quiz
What does the law/policy regarding looked after children say?
2.15 pm: Challenges for those in a leadership role – exercise
How can you evaluate the quality of the service provided by your council?
2.45 pm: Sharing dilemmas and solutions – plenary discussion
How satisfied are you with your current practice? What have other councils done?
3.15 pm: Improving outcomes
How can you identify the priorities for action? What action do you need to take?
3.30 pm: Discussion and evaluation
3.45 pm: Close and tea/coffee
