This week is European Local Democracy Week

European Local Democracy Week 2011 was launched in Utrecht (The Netherlands) on 10 October 2011. This year's theme is 'Human rights at local level'.

From 10 to 16 October 2011, towns and cities in the 47 Council of Europe countries will be launching programmes of activities with the participation of their citizens as part of the European Local Democracy Week. At the launch Cllr Keith Whitmore of Manchester City Council highlighted the importance of the theme: 'Local authorities are facing, today, an increased responsibility in dealing with human rights'.
