LGA responds to Openreach announcement

Media release

Responding to the announcement today that BT is to legally separate its Openreach division, Chairman of the LGA's People and Places Board, Cllr Mark Hawthorne, said:

"We are pleased that an agreement has been reached on the future roles of BT and Openreach.

"For residents and businesses the ultimate test will be whether this move improves the level of broadband provision and the quality of service they receive.

"Access to fast and reliable digital connectivity is increasingly a necessity for households and businesses right across the UK.

"Councils have played a major role in campaigning to raise awareness of the need for fast broadband, and will continue to work with Ofcom and others to ensure access is provided to world class digital infrastructure.

"We look forward to working with an independent Openreach, as well as other alternative network providers, to deliver fast and reliable connections everywhere, particularly in more rural areas."
