Local government is at the forefront of protecting and managing the historic environment. Be it through the planning system, or through supporting community involvement in local assets, councils care for and enhance local areas, stimulating interest and encouraging awareness of local heritage.
But local government is changing and this will impact upon how local heritage services are configured, delivered and the partnerships that are forged.
Many councils now see themselves as strategic commissioners of local services. This radically different landscape presents opportunities and challenges for heritage services.
Finally, this summer Britain will host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This is a huge opportunity to show off to the world our unique heritage and history.
