LGA/DfE action research on the council role in education

The purpose of this research is to explore how local authorities are evolving and adapting their role to meet the needs of a more autonomous education system. The particular focus of the research has been on three core responsibilities of the local authority in education:

1. Ensuring a sufficient supply of school places.
2. Tackling underperformance in schools and ensuring high standards.
3. Supporting vulnerable children.

It examines how councils are working with local schools and academies to tackle the challenges and opportunities presented by an education system in which schools have greater freedom and contains case studies on the solutions that are emerging.
