Open public data consultation

One of the key pledges of the Government is to transform people's relationship with the state through access to open public data.

Government believes that open data is a cornerstone of transparency and will:

  • improve local accountability
  • lead to greater choice and informed choice
  • power economic growth
  • give users more power to self-serve (social growth)
  • improve productivity through better consistent and comparable data (better quality).

The Cabinet Office is consulting on two policies about the use of public and open data.

  • Making open data real: a proposal for developing open Government and embedding a culture of openness and transparency in public services
  • Data policy for a public data corporation: proposal for a data policy framework to support more consistent approach towards access and accessibility of public sector information in respect to charging, licensing and regulation of public sector information for reuse.

The Local Government Association produced a summary document which provides a brief overview of the two policy documents and their possible impact on local public services.
