Responding to National Parks Week, Cllr Ian Stephens, Chair of the LGA’s Culture, Tourism and Sport Board, said:

"National parks are fantastic assets - major tourist attractions with an international reputation. It is vital that their value is recognised in government strategies, ensuring they get the resources and skills they need to continue to attract visitors from home and abroad.

“LGA research has shown that devolving greater powers over transport, skills and employment support, and support for businesses will help boost the visitor economy.

“We also know that having access to natural spaces improves mental wellbeing, helps people to recover from injuries and illness faster, and improves productivity for workers with access to them from nearby offices and factories, making these areas of natural beauty a phenomenal health resource as well.

“Local and central leaders need to work together to make the most of them, and ensure as many people can enjoy their parks as possible.”
