Cllr James Jamieson, Chairman of the Local Government Association, responds to the announcement of the sad passing of James Brokenshire MP.

Early support hubs which allow young people to access mental health support without referrals should be made available nationwide to help tackle a rise in mental health issues during the pandemic.

“Social care is a complex arena spanning multiple partners across the public, private and voluntary sectors. For a long time, there have been significant challenges, including financial and workforce pressures and the COVID-19 Pandemic has only exacerbated these issues."

“If we are to come out of this pandemic with a society that is truly levelled up, the vital services that councils provide must be at the heart of it."

"We want to work quickly with government to clarify the details of the funding, including how it will be distributed and any guidance on how it must be used."

“Councils want to work with government to build the housing we need, ensuring it is affordable, built in the right places and supported by the right infrastructure to serve the needs of local communities."

"Councils want to make sure that everybody who needs fuel can access it safely and swiftly. We encourage people to be considerate of our essential workers such as health and care staff, so they can get the fuel they need to do their vital daily roles caring for our older and most vulnerable members of our communities."

“To respond to what children and young people have told us, we need funding to reinvest in vital universal and early help services, including mental health and wellbeing services for children and young people, and properly resourced holistic family support for families experiencing financial hardship."

The programme, which opens for bids today, boosts council capacity through the provision of independent expertise for councils undertaking specific projects to tackle the effects of the housing crisis in local communities – including on housing delivery, planning for homes, and reducing homelessness.
