Cllr Ian Hudspeth, Chairman of the LGA's Community Wellbeing Board, responds to Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock’s speech today that Public Health England is to be replaced with the National Institute for Health Protection.

“We really do encourage parents to check if their child needs any vaccinations to make sure they are properly protected.”

Councils in England are set to benefit from this year’s Design in the Public Sector programme which is themed on tackling climate change.

People need to take all necessary health precautions as Britain looks set to bask in a heatwave and keep an eye on vulnerable or elderly family and friends - while maintaining social distancing – who are most at risk if they catch coronavirus.

“Councils have been working closely with schools throughout the coronavirus pandemic to ensure they remain open for vulnerable children and families, and where needed, councils have delivered vital IT equipment for children."

The vast majority of councils say that the LGA’s sector-led improvement is the right approach, according to an independent report.

“The Government needs to use the forthcoming Spending Review to ensure councils have long-term, sustainable funding to invest in preventative, universal and early help services so children, young people and families receive the practical, emotional, educational and mental health support they need, as soon as they need it.”

“It is councils who know their local areas best, so they should be given the freedom to work with their local communities to get on with planning active travel infrastructure such as cycling schemes."

“Housing must be a central part of the national recovery from coronavirus. Now is the time for a genuine renaissance in council house-building that reduces homelessness, gets rough sleepers off the streets for good, supports people’s wellbeing and is climate-friendly.”
