Councils are extremely concerned about the current pressures facing social care and the capacity and financial resources required to deliver the Government’s reform agenda.

“It is crucial that the impacts of any social care reforms on councils are thoroughly assessed and are manageable, costed and centred on people who draw on care.”

“The easy savings have long since gone. Councils are being faced with tough decisions about cutting valued services, increasing council tax and fees and charges during a cost-of-living crisis.  "

"We need to see further urgent investment in adult social care and a boost to the social care workforce to ensure the best possible care for those that need it.”

Years of significant underfunding of councils, coupled with rising demand and costs for care and support, have combined to push adult social care services to breaking point.

Councils are urging residents to keep an eye on vulnerable or elderly family and friends and help save lives as the nation heads outside to bask in the sunshine. 

“If we are to truly level up, we must focus on reducing poor health outcomes as well as economic imbalances between regions. It is encouraging that the levelling up white paper is expected to address narrowing the gap in healthy life expectancy and reducing obesity."

The LGA is warning that the fine amount is too low and might let unscrupulous businesses off the hook.

People are being urged to ensure vulnerable friends, neighbours and relatives are safe when the big freeze bites, with a high chance of snow and ice in parts of the country.

“We support NAO’s recommendation that DHSC must assess the impact of its current and planned reform interventions on local authorities and consult with stakeholders to ensure its plans are manageable.”
