From March 2022, the Bristol City Council Neighbourhood and Communities service have convened staff from across the council to understand the potential impacts of the rising cost of living on individuals and communities.

Bristol City Council’s employment, skills and learning service works proactively to ensure it adds value to the skills and employment system, including through its ‘Bristol One City’ partnership.

Bristol Council has adopted a public health approach to tackling violent crime – and in doing so is fully engaging the community.  A stakeholder group has helped to design and implement the strategy, while community champions have been recruited to work with young people. This case study is an example of how councils are tackling youth violence

As part of its approach to cost of living, Bristol City Council has created a network of more than 80 warm and accessible community-led spaces in established places of connection such as community centres, children’s centres and faith spaces, providing extra activities and capacity during the winter.

This case study is an example of how city-wide commissions supported by the council and other stakeholders can make a difference.

Background The Marmot Review ‘Fair society, healthy lives' states that: "targeting [20 mph] zones in deprived residential areas would help lead to reductions in health inequalities".

Bristol City Council set up a programme to tackle youth crime and exploitation in a partnership between the council, police, schools and voluntary sector which provides a range of support to vulnerable children.

Through the development of a Work Local model, the council wants to improve employment, skills and workforce development opportunities. By engaging with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to understand their future workforce needs, and working with local partner agencies, the city council is building a support offer for local residents to develop job opportunities and career pathways.

This case study is an example of a city wide forum which brings together public sector organisations to tackle race inequality in the city.
