London Borough of Lambeth has benefited from over £800k from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) Land Release Fund (LRF), which is managed by the One Public Estate (OPE) programme, to support delivery of affordable housing and regeneration on council owned land.

Hartlepool is a coastal town of about 93,000 people, situated in the North East of England. It was founded on ship building and steel making and has areas of high deprivation as well as more prosperous parts. It retains its industrial sector but is also expanding in the arts and creative sectors and is home to Britain’s oldest floating warship, HMS Trincomalee. Hartlepool Council successfully secured LRF funding to remove development constraints on Council owned land in a disadvantaged area of the town. This funding allowed the council to secure a local developer to deliver private for sale housing, to help diversify the housing mix and support the regeneration of the area.

Brighton is physically constrained with a short supply of vacant land for housing, coupled with high housing demand. With Land Release Funding and OPE support the local authority has unlocked a series of complex, unviable council-owned sites - and delivered 84 award-winning, affordable homes. Civic pride has increased and anti-social behaviour reduced from the regenerative effect.

A growing demand for appropriate accommodation for adults with social care needs – along with a lack of suitable properties – led Dorset Council to use land which is destined for regeneration to create temporary, adaptable, and moveable homes for local residents.

We wanted to take the opportunity to share the progress of two One Public Estate (OPE) projects and how OPE funding can be used to lead to larger programmes of work and link in with other funding streams, in this case the GLA Future Neighbourhood 2030 programme.
