LGA Conservatives

The LGA Conservative Group is the national voice for Conservative Local Government. We are here to support both Conservative council groups and Conservative councillors. Conservatives are leading the way in local government, embracing the new localist agenda, protecting frontline services and offering value for money.

Autumn statement 2022

Responding to the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement, Cllr Izzi Seccombe OBE, Leader of the LGA Conservative Group, said:

“In the context of a very difficult global economic situation resulting from Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and post-lockdown inflationary pressures, today’s Autumn Statement was much more positive for local government than many had anticipated.

“Particularly welcome is the up to £2.8 billion in 2023-2024 and £4.7 billion in 2024-2025 for adult social care to help the most vulnerable in society.

“Social care and the NHS are inextricably linked, so the £3.3 billion in both 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 to improve the performance of the NHS is also good news.

“I welcome the delay announced today to the adult social care reforms as this should provide the opportunity to learn from the trailblazers and ensure that the proper funding and support is in place for a successful implementation.

“Increases in the budget for schools of £2.3 billion in the next two financial years will also help to deliver a good start in life for children and young people.

“Conservative local government is excited by the levelling up agenda, and I therefore strongly welcome the announcement that Round 2 of the Levelling Up Fund will invest at least £1.7 billion in local projects across the UK, with further details expected in due course.

“Linked to this, it is great news that the building of new infrastructure such as roads, train lines and communities will be safeguarded by over £600 billion in capital investment over the next five years.

“Such projects, alongside work to improve skills and training, will help grow our economy and level up regions across the UK.

“The positive news in relation to devolution deals in Suffolk, Cornwall, Norfolk and the North East is also welcome and will bring real benefits to those living in those areas.

“Whilst government spending will continue to increase in real terms every year for the next five years, this will be at a slower rate at a time when councils are facing significant additional costs due to rising energy prices and wages, increased inflation and growing demands on services.

“Therefore, whilst I welcome the Government’s recognition of these pressures in today’s announcements, my colleagues and I will continue to have honest but constructive discussions with Ministers about the challenges that the sector will undoubtedly continue to face.”
