Cllr Shabina Bano statement

I am writing to formally and with immediate effect resign from the Labour party.

Having represented Labour as a Councillor for Small Heath Ward this decision should be difficult. However, after 28 months of an institutional campaign of harassment I have concluded that Birmingham Labour does not reflect my values. During my time in the Birmingham Labour Group, I have experienced bullying, misogyny, gas lighting, dishonesty, duplicity and corrosive corrupt factionalism. It is now time to move on, and I have today joined the Birmingham Liberal Democrat Group whose values are more closely aligned with mine.

Birmingham Labour is no longer fit for purpose. The fact that this has gone on for so long, and the leadership has continually failed to address my concerns or resolve the wider issues within the party demonstrates this. The council chamber is used by Birmingham Labour as a battle ground for factionalism, The party is deeply divided, and the corrosive infighting is having an impact on the ability of councillors to serve their residents effectively.

I have consistently sought to raise my concerns through the appropriate channels, yet I have been deeply disheartened by the lack of understanding and support from the party's leadership. The hostility and marginalization I have faced, particularly as a proud, independent Pakistani woman, has left me disgusted and disillusioned. I can no longer remain in a party that silences and side-lines individuals like me; individuals who work hard and strive to serve their communities with honesty and dedication.

Despite the personal attacks and challenges, I have always done my utmost to represent and serve the people of Small Heath Ward, and I will continue to do so. I am looking forward to doing this now with the support of a strong, supportive group of colleagues in the Birmingham Liberal Democrat Group who have welcomed me today.

As a Liberal Democrat councillor, I believe I can champion the values of liberty, equality, democracy, and human rights. I will continue to serve my constituents with the same passion and commitment, but now under a banner that truly reflects my principles.

This is not an attack on any individual, but rather a reflection of the toxic dynamics at play within Birmingham Labour. My goal in politics has always been to empower people, fight for equality, and ensure every voice is heard. I am confident the Birmingham Liberal Democrats will allow me to continue this important work, free from the infighting that has plagued my time in Labour.
