Responding to the Government’s relaunch of its adult social care recruitment campaign, Cllr Ian Hudspeth, Chairman of the Local Government Association’s Community Wellbeing Board, said:
“Making sure older and vulnerable people get the care and protection they need to stay safe and well is priority number one for councils.
“Now more than ever, people working in social care are playing a vital and valuable role in society and this campaign is another important boost to this in-demand profession.
“Our own reignited Return to Social Work programme has already trained and recruited dozens of staff and ensuring vulnerable adults and children can continue to receive the essential support that they need. This is in addition to regional recruitment campaigns run by councils themselves.
“Anyone returning to the profession will no doubt share the concerns that have been expressed about shortages of PPE. There remains an urgent need for all social care staff and other council workers to have access to reliable and ongoing supplies of quality PPE, increased rapid and comprehensive testing and greater support with staffing and other equipment.
“This is vital if they are to be best protected and able to play a lead role in defeating coronavirus.”

The LGA has launched the Social Work Together campaign in partnership with Social Work England and government to help support vulnerable people during these difficult times.
This is in addition to the LGA’s existing Return to Social Work campaign and regional recruitment campaigns run by councils themselves.
