Digital Best Practice

Councils are coordinating and delivering remarkable digital solutions to address the multitude of challenges for a council in 21st Century. We have seen the local government sector pool its resources, respond to new problems and innovate solutions. Here is a selection of digital best practice from the sector.

Digital Connectivity Programme

Delivered by the Local Government Association (LGA), the Digital Connectivity Programme is a grant-funded programme that builds your council’s skills and capacity to take advantage of the opportunities offered by connectivity to your local place and communities.

Digital Experts, Transformation and Channel Shift Programmes

Our digital funded programmes support councils to innovate and improve digital service.

Digital Housing Programme

Digital Housing Programme: Councils are continually looking to innovate in order to deal with increasing demand and pressure to the services that they run on behalf of local residents. The past few years has seen digital service delivery becoming more and more relevant in increasing resident accessibility to services and delivering efficiencies. In March 2018, the LGA funded five councils to reuse the digital assets and learning from the Kent Home Choice Partnership project.

Digital Inclusion Programme

The Digital Inclusion Programme supports 10 councils to work with specific cohorts of residents to support those who haven’t had the skills, confidence or infrastructure to go online so they can benefit from the potential for digital tools and solutions to contribute to improving life outcomes.

Digital Pathfinders Programme

The LGA is launching a new Digital Pathfinders Programme. The programme is designed to support councils seeking to innovate and develop pioneering initiatives to advance digital inclusion, digital connectivity and cyber security.

Digital Showcase

The objective of the LGA Digital Showcase is to show some of the excellent and innovative work councils are doing to redesign and improve their services, as well as ways of working, using digital tools and solutions.

Local Government Digital Committee (LGDC)

The Local Government Digital Committee (LGDC) was established in late 2007, under the auspices of the Local Government Association, in order to provide leadership across the sector on the service transformation agenda.

Public Switched Telephone Network

The plan to move all customers from traditional landlines by 2025 will have an impact on local authorities and residents.

  • How, if at all, are you preparing for the analogue to digital switchover?
  • Are you clear on what it means for your organisation?

In October 2021, the LGA hosted an event allowing the sector to hear more about this subject. This event also allowed colleagues to voice their concerns while, pursuing any additional information from those leading on this on behalf of the telecoms industry and government. You can catch up on the presentation delivered by Norfolk County Council and find an FAQ sheet answered by industry leads.

Keep an eye out on this webpage for regular updated on this subject matter and how it will affect your local authority. If you have any questions, please email LGACyberSecurity@local.gov.uk

Stakeholder groups

Digital Inclusion Network

The Digital Inclusion Network was established in 2020 for councils, to share best practice, network and hear about emerging initiatives in the digital inclusion space to work together to fix the digital divide. This group meets every two months and selects speakers from various councils and organisations to present on their digitally inclusion programmes and work  within their communities. The Digital Inclusion Network facilitates open dialogue around digital inclusion and allows for councils to network with various organisations.

Transformation Network

The Transformation Network was established in 2020, invites councils to meet and discuss various areas of digital transformation, within local authorities. Chaired by Debbie Knopp, from Essex County Council, the Transformation Network meets every two months. The network is centred around discussing examples of digital transformation such as new ways of working and how to facilitate digital transformation within the community.

Digital Construction Working Group

The Digital Construction Working Group was created, in 2022, to support local authorities overcome preconceived obstacles around the various new ways of digital working. This specifically pertains to digital ways of working for construction, procurement and supply chain services and programmes. The primary aim of the group is to educate the sector on best practice and explore low-cost proof of concepts to establish recognition and awareness of these ways of working.

Local Government Digital Committee (LGDC)

The Local Government Digital Committee was established in 2007, as a way of providing sector leadership and guidance on the service transformation agenda. The group is chaired by Matt Prosser, CEO of Dorset Council and meets every two months. The group exists for chief executives and senior digital directors from Local Government to provide a single coherent voice for the sector.
