What have Economic Development officers learnt from the pandemic response and what are the opportunities for the future?

  • Date: Tuesday 24 May 2022, 10am-12pm
  • Chair: Paul Clifford, Head of Economic Development, Barnsley Council

Local authorities have been at the forefront of the response to the pandemic, playing a leading in role in producing social distancing guidelines, distributing Government grants for businesses whilst continuing with day to delivery of regular services. In addition, the numerous lockdowns and closure of shops has accelerated the decline in traditional retail in city centres whilst hybrid working has highlighted the need to develop digital connectivity strategies and ensure people working from home have access to ultra-fast broadband.

However, within these challenges there have been opportunities to develop more mixed-use regeneration schemes in town and city centres as well as attract more inward investment as people begin to move away from traditional urban centres into rural and coastal areas.

This roundtable has been organised to reflect on the learnings from the past two years and share insights into how councils are now moving forward, adapting their strategies to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic whilst looking to build resilience in the future and create a place where people can live, work, and study.

The roundtable will be a facilitated discussion to provide an opportunity for officers working on economic growth and development to share their thoughts on the agenda items and share insights and learning across the sector. Places are limited so we ask that one officer per council attends.
