National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER)

Ever since 1946 NFER has been working to equip decision makers, managers and practitioners with the most innovative thinking, practical research and responsive assessment programmes to underpin the drive towards excellence in education and lifelong learning.

NFER undertakes around 200 research projects every year and work spans all sectors of education, from pre-school to lifelong learning. It provides high quality, evidence-based research for policy makers, managers and practitioners. NFER offers a wide range of services and information sites, making it a one-stop shop for anyone interested in education and educational research.

Local Government Education and Children's Services Research Programme

The Local Government Association (LGA) has, for many years, commissioned a programme of research and information from NFER funded by the Revenue Support Grant top-slice from the Department for Communities and Local Government. This work offers a unique opportunity for the LGA to address policy development and improvement support issues of key interest to local government, which are unlikely to be prioritised by other national programmes.

The Research programme

The research programme is designed to support both the work of local authorities and the LGA. The programme is managed by the LGA and is overseen by their Children and Young People Board.

The programme offers a unique opportunity for the LGA to address topics and issues of key interest to local government which are unlikely to be prioritised by other national sponsors. Topics to be investigated are agreed by the LGA and NFER, according to the needs and priorities of local authorities (LAs) and the LGA.
