Local government's ambition is much greater than the White Paper, which lacks substantive measures to support councils in enabling housing growth, and to build the genuinely affordable homes for those at the sharp end of the housing crisis.

The Housing White Paper presents an important shift in the government’s housing strategy on a number of fronts.

Local government would welcome discussions with Government on potential impacts on councils of the Illegal Migration Bill. A Committee of the Whole House will take place in the House of Lords from 24 May 2023.

Councils have a proud history of welcoming new arrivals, stepping forward at times of crisis to offer homes and support so families and individuals can build new lives in the UK. The Bill adds extra complexity to areas seeking to manage community cohesion or community tensions as a result of asylum and resettlement accommodation.

Local authorities are responsible for preventing the most vulnerable migrants from falling into destitution and homelessness.

Whilst announcements of new funds are welcome, this should not replace the core funding required to support integral local government services.

People can be vulnerable in a wide range of different ways. Councils are often at the forefront of understanding, mitigating and managing this complexity in their local communities.
