A summary of the proposals of most relevance and significance to local government, as well as the LGA’s initial reaction to the proposals along with our policy messages.

Data shows that council-maintained schools receive better Ofsted ratings, and improve more quickly, than academy schools. Analysis undertaken for the LGA showed that ninety-one per cent of maintained schools are now rated as either Good or Outstanding.

Councils are uniquely placed to deliver programmes that improve the lives of children and young people, as they have responsibility for delivering over 800 local services. This includes councils’ duty to protect children and young people from involvement in, and the impact of, youth violence.

Key messages 

Councils have a significant and positive impact on the lives of their female residents. As well as encouraging them to enter public life, councils provide a range of services that improve the lives of women.

The Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill acts upon long running asks from councils and the LGA for further devolution in England.

Local government has a key role to play in protecting children and young people from involvement in, and the impact of, organised crime.

The Government’s White Paper on the future UK trade policy references the importance of involving local government in the development of this policy, which we welcomed. Local leaders are eager to share their experiences and to support the Government in developing and agreeing new trade deals.

We are seeking assurances from the Government that this Bill will have no detrimental impact on local government.

Supporting and improving the wellbeing and rights of carers is a priority for local government.
