The primary aim of this document is to help senior HR professionals and their teams to develop local action plans for workforce improvement by providing facts and ideas.

The final workforce data standards have been published by the LGA, DCSF and its partners. A review process will revisit the standards but no changes will be made to the data standards without full consultation with all partners and the sector as a whole.

This briefing provides local councillors with a strong business case to improve work and health and economic growth outcomes in their local council. The focus is on supporting people to stay in work; helping people return to work; and helping people who are not in work to find employment.

We have one of the most centralised employment and skills systems in the developed world. Different central government departments and their agencies are directly responsible for employment and skills policy, design, funding and oversight. Local areas have little ability to influence priorities, funding or delivery.
