The LGA’s report Housing our homeless households responds to rising concern amongst local authorities about the increasing homelessness pressures being faced across the country.

In light of rising homelessness and the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 the LGA facilitated a seminar for senior officers from councils in the South West.

This report by the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), supported by the LGA, sets out examples of local authority innovation in initiatives currently being undertaken across the country, covering both urban and rural areas and working in the face of a range of housing challenges.

At the LGA Annual Conference in July 2016 we published the preliminary findings from the commission. Since then, we have been impressed and proud of the work underway in the sector, and encouraged by the initial response from the Government.

The legislation completed its passage through Parliament on 11 May 2016 and received Royal Assent on 12 May 2016.

Our housing crisis demands action now. Spiralling house prices are forcing difficult choices on families, distorting places and hampering growth.

The objective of our survey was to assess the impact of new national planning policy exempting development of 10 homes or less and redevelopment of vacant buildings (the so-called ‘Vacant Building Credit') from section 106 affordable housing contributions.
