The LGA’s better use of data programme offers a range of free-to-access support to help councils recognise the full value of data and make good use of it for decision-making. This in turn brings better outcomes for residents and businesses, and efficient working across services and with partners.
Support to make better use of data
The LGA is working to help local authorities develop an evidence-informed culture which will enable well-informed decisions and improve service design, accountability, and transparency. The support that is currently available is outlined below.
- Performance management for local authorities
For councils, performance management is about using data to inform actions that will improve outcomes for residents. We offer a range of resources to help councillors and officers to deliver effective performance management, including e-learning, virtual data training sessions and peer support through performance management panels. - Local Government Data Maturity Assessment Tool
Our refreshed data maturity model and self-assessment tool was launched in August 2023, taking account of updates in the data landscape and feedback from councils. Councils can use this light-touch tool to assess their data maturity, plan next steps and find resources to support their data maturity journey. - Advanced and predictive analytics support
Our advanced and predictive analytics network (APAN) provides a place for analysts to discuss issues, share ideas and learn from each other. Through the network we also run webinars and share resources, guidance and development opportunities. - Access to free data science training
We have secured access for local government analysts to the Office for National Statistics’ (ONS’s) Data Science Campus learning hub, which contains a wealth of courses covering a wide range of analysis and methodological areas, ranging from introductory to advanced. - Open data and transparency
We provide advice and guidance to support councils in complying with the Transparency Code and making data more open. We also offer a range of support on data standards; providing tools, schemas, and guidance to assist councils to improve their management of data so it can easily be used for insight, performance management and service delivery, and shared with others.
