Responding to the Government's launch of a £250 million fund to support weekly bin collections, Councillor Clyde Loakes, Vice Chairman of the LGA Environment Board, said: "In areas where financial considerations have held councils back from operating weekly collections this new money will come in useful, particularly at a time when councils are having to cope with cuts of 28 per cent to their budgets."

The LGA has strong concerns with proposed amendments to Clause 40 of the Protection of Freedoms Bill, and is urging Peers not to support their introduction. We believe these amendments would severely curtail the ability of councils' trading standards teams to protect their residents from criminal or dangerous activity.

Responding to plans for councils to be allowed to charge lane rental fees to utility companies carrying out roadworks, Councillor Peter Box, Chairman of the LGA's Economy and Transport Board, said: "Councils have long called for the power to introduce lane rental schemes to ease roadwork congestion for motorists during rush-hour. This announcement from the Department for Transport is a step in the right direction..."
