The LGA Independent Group represents councillors in England and Wales who are Independent, Green, Plaid Cymru or from smaller parties. We provide our members with a voice at the national level and work within the cross-party Local Government Association (LGA) to ensure that the values and interests of our members are represented. We work within the LGA to shape its policy work as well as parliamentary briefings and press work. We also work with the LGA to advise on and provide improvement support, mentoring, training, and events with our network of member peers.

The Independent Group Annual Report 2024
The ascent of Independents and Green parties in the recent local elections is nothing short of breathtaking. Independents with Residents Associations gained 104 members and Greens increased by 74 members. In total, including the smaller parties, the group saw 464 members elected, a gain of 184 seats, on a par with Labour and leaving the Conservatives reeling with a loss of 474 seats.
Policy think tanks and councillor networks
The LGA Independent Group is the most politically diverse group of councillors within the LGA. It is important that we harness the knowledge and experience of our members to ensure that we are working effectively and that our voices are heard.
