“As this report highlights, awarding funding in small pots on a competitive basis has created uncertainty and hindered councils’ ability to plan strategically for their communities.

"We are pleased the review recognises the importance of local government in delivering net zero", said Cllr David Renard, Environment spokesperson for the Local Government Association.

“Councils are on the side of all road users and residents, and are working hard to tackle congestion, make our air cleaner and improve the quality of life in their communities.  We want to work with government to achieve this."

“We fully support the conclusions of this helpful annual report and councils remain committed to ensuring that older people live independent and fulfilling lives.

People need to take all necessary health precautions as Britain looks set to bask in a heatwave and keep an eye on vulnerable or elderly family and friends - while maintaining social distancing – who are most at risk if they catch coronavirus.

The Local Government Association, which represents councils in England, said people should think carefully before travelling to beaches, parks and other public places and to get in the habit of checking they are safe to visit, following our reaching of step 4 of the Government’s roadmap.

“Councils are ideally placed to help achieve this, bringing together government, agencies and providers alongside their local leadership and expert knowledge of their areas, as we identified in our Work Local programme."

“While it is good the Government will continue to help the public sector as well as businesses keep their energy bills lower and provided some certainty for the next 12 months, we remain deeply concerned about the risk to some council services."

We need a radical shift in the top-down, centralised approach we use to match people with jobs and this interim report’s findings are a positive first step towards achieving this

“We have long argued that stopping terrorism requires a broad and joined-up approach. Investing in a long-term approach, which includes a multi-agency support offer for those at risk, is vital in addressing some of the wider issues that may contribute to individuals becoming radicalised and create tensions in our communities.
