Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and Twin Valley Homes have turned a wilting nursery business into a community work scheme. The Four Seasons garden project aims to get people from deprived areas into work, partly as a way to improve their health. Part of Lifestyles for Work, the project is also looking at ways to increase the environmental sustainability of both the site and its partner organisations.

Blackpool Council's Care Leaver Employment Adviser (CLEA) project provides a dedicated worker for young people (16 to 25 years) who have been looked after by the local authority. This role aims to support young people to take up a job, training, or work placement.

Blackpool Council has worked with neighbouring areas to share good practice when it comes to sexual health services. It has helped the council improve and develop the way it provides support. This case study forms part of our sexual health resource.

Summary Cycle Blackpool was set up by Blackpool Council to increase the number of people that use and own bikes. This is a way of increasing levels of physical activity and reducing health inequalities. It has started a number of projects that focus specifically on people exposed to health inequalities or already living with chronic conditions.

Following the relaxation of lockdown restrictions in 2020, there was an increase in antisocial behaviour. The police were seeking criminal behaviour orders against five children.   With summer holidays approaching, the Youth Justice Service (YJS) wanted to put a rapid response in place to prevent further escalation and to address the community’s concerns.

Blackpool Council has an integrated alcohol, drugs and sexual health support service for all residents known as Horizon and delivered by a partnership of different organisations.

Well known for its attractions such as the Pleasure Beach, trams, the Tower and illuminations, Blackpool attracts 18 million visitors per year and generates £1.5 billion in visitor spend. Following a decline in its visitor numbers, the town began to reverse its fortunes from 2014 onwards through a sustained programme of investment.

Blackpool’s integrated Children’s Oral Health Improvement System   Case study synopsis (100 words):  

Blackpool, has been developing an integrated approach to improving children’s oral health. This is linked to the focus on the work of the Blackpool Better Start and a recognition that a range of interventions focused on population and individual approaches is required to achieve better life chances for the children of Blackpool.
