Leeds has integrated its substance misuse services – and this is helping boost innovation. Support is being moved into GP centres, there is an enhanced family service and a new team to work with those with earlystage alcohol problems.

Leeds City Council and partners are working on a ‘breakthrough project’ on early intervention and reducing health inequalities through linking integrated healthy living services, community development, GP social prescribing, NHS Health Check, and a range of other community activity with clear referral pathways.

Leeds City Council Adult Social Care has fully embraced strengths-based approaches in the delivery of its social services responsibilities.

Within Leeds, there are some areas which have high levels of alcohol-related harm and alcohol-related anti-social behaviour (ASB). This data led to Leeds’ licensing and public health teams working together to develop an alcohol licensing data matrix.

Several of the experts by experience that we spoke to stressed the importance of evaluating services from the perspective of people with a learning disability, and particularly seeking the opinions of those who use them.

West and East Midlands ADASS with Herefordshire County Council, Lincolnshire County Council Nottinghamshire County Council and Walsall Metropolitan Borough Councils and supported living providers in the council areas developed a pilot project to work with supported living providers and partners in the NHS to help social care staff to identify the signs that someone with a learning disability is deteriorating and work with NHS staff to get the person the care they need in this situation.  

Birmingham City Council is the largest employer in the city. They have committed to improving the pay and work opportunities for people from marginalised ethnic groups through improving their recruitment process, setting up a dedicated equalities and cohesion team and the carrying out the council’s first Workforce Race Equity Review. Lancaster City Council set up a COVID-19 Safe Award for local shops, restaurants and pubs to act as a guide to the public that the businesses were adhering to the local guidance.
