The Medway Stop Smoking Service offers behavioural support and stop smoking medicines to all adult smokers in the local population.

Matt Woor was Suffolk County Council’s Communications Lead for Adult Social Care when they volunteered to be part of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) pilot.

Suffolk County Council was a late addition to the pilot scheme when the call came in early summer Director of Adult and Community Services Georgia Chimbani put her hand up. “We thought why not, we are always striving to improve and this seemed a good way to test ourselves.”

Libraries in Suffolk provide a comprehensive range of mental health and wellbeing help situated in the hearts of towns and villages across the county. 

Stroud District Council has launched a healthy lifestyle programme for the over 50s. It has led to a series of events being held, including walking football and walking netball. Dementia-friendly training is also being rolled out, while plans are in place to create a network of community champions to build on the momentum created so far. This case study shows how district councils have improved the health of their local areas.

Liverpool City Council linked its homecare providers with technology providers. The impact has been much more significant than it originally envisaged, leading to the uptake of technological care solutions across the city, bringing in £1 million euros of additional funding to social care and leading to better outcomes for people using services. Summary

An alliance bringing together the public, private and voluntary sectors has been supported by Stockport Council to help tackle digital exclusion. Local residents have been trained to become “digital champions” and a dedicated helpline and a device lending library set up. Since the programme started in 2018 thousands of residents have been helped improve their digital skills, reduce the risk of isolation in the process.

This case study shows the excellent work that public health in local government is doing to commission for quality and best value across all areas.

Commissioners from Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent and Telford and Wrekin councils worked together to jointly tender for sexual health and HIV services. The move has had a variety of advantages, allowing the three areas to benefit from economies of scale and better partnership working with each other and the provider for the benefit of the patients.
