The transition of local government into public health has created opportunities for local authorities to make a greater impact on improving the health of local communities. In 2013 the Local Government Association (LGA) launched ‘Rewiring Public Services. A key part of this campaign is for councils to take a lead role in health issues.

The Government has announced that children's public health commissioning for 0 to five-year-olds will transfer from NHS England to local government on 1 October 2015.
The £3.8 billion Better Care Fund (formerly Integration Transformation Fund) was announced by the Government in the June 2013 Spending Round, to ensure a transformation in integrated health and social care. The BCF is a single pooled budget to support health and social care services to work more closely together in local areas.
