The first series of LGA Smith Square debates for 2012 kicks off on 29 February with a session linked to our 'Independent Local Government' campaign. It will be looking at the merits of constitutional reform to make the roles of Whitehall and councils clearer to local residents. Before the debate, hear from one of our panellists, Graham Allen MP, as he offers his views on independent local government.

The first £100 million of money recovered from collapsed Icelandic bank Landsbanki will be paid into council accounts this week. The payment follows successful legal action, coordinated by the LGA, to secure priority creditor status for UK local authorities following the winding up of Icelandic banks Lansbanki and Glitnir.

A new campaign has been launched to consider how to make the roles of Whitehall and councils clearer to local residents. Its aim is to improve democratic accountability and give greater power to local people, by making it clearer who is in charge of their public services. The campaign is an initiative between Graham Allen MP, Chair of the Political Constitutional Reform Select Committee, and the LGA.

The highly-regarded graduate recruitment programme used by councils has the potential to drive up standards in town halls even further if take-up increases, a recent report has revealed. According to the study from the LGA, Solace Enterprises and iMPOWER, hiring more university leavers in the Local Government National Graduate Development Programme (NGDP) will lead to greater development and innovation.
