Transformational leadership is the ability to inspire and motivate employees and stakeholders to create the conditions for successful transformation. Making decisions is essential to this.


What is decision making?

The practice of choosing a course of action based on a set of alternatives, to achieve the desired end outcomes.

Essential for:

  • All types of transformation.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the Council’s strategic priorities and desired outcomes
  • Knowledge of the constitution and governance in relation to decision making powers / roles and responsibilities
  • Understanding of how to evaluate options.

Skills

Able to:

  • Define the decision: Bringing clarity to the decision needed and criteria to be used to make it.
  • Map the data: To understand the information needed to support options analysis.
  • Gather and / or interpret information: To analyse different options and impacts in the context of the end outcome.
  • Evaluate: Strengths and weaknesses of the options.
  • Select: The best suited option based on options analysis.
  • Communicate: The decision and the rationale for it orally and / or in written format.
  • Seek inputs: Bringing together perspectives and wider skills to achieve inputs from others as needed.
