The information and ideas in this briefing aim to support local authorities in protecting and improving their population’s health and wellbeing, and reducing health inequalities, by tackling homelessness and its causes.

From the beginning of lockdown, it was apparent that COVID-19 would have a significant impact on the culture, leisure, tourism and sport sectors. To gain a better understanding of this impact, the Local Government Association (LGA) undertook a series of interviews with senior council officers for culture and leisure between April and June 2020.

This note provides guidance on the interpretation of the key issues within The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (All Tiers) (England) Regulations 2020 (referred to as ‘the regulations’) and in particular the Tier 2 ‘High Alert’ restrictions. New tiered restrictions come into effect on Wednesday 2 December and are due to be in place until 2 February 2021.

2013/14 has been a busy and challenging first year of operation for all Health and Wellbeing Boards (HWBs) and their local systems. There is an overwhelming sense – articulated in a number of independent reports published in late 2013 – that the transfer of public health has gone well in all 152 areas, and that all HWBs have made a strong and enthusiastic start.

The LGA has published a paper ‘'Empowering Councils to make a difference' that looks in detail at the usage of the GPC by councils – the paper shows that councils are currently using the power to promote innovation in a number of areas. The paper also outlines constraints of the power and top tips. 

The Local Government Association commissioned SYSTRA Ltd to undertake research to initiate a debate on the future of public transport in England, outside of London, with a focus on local bus services.

With the country at an historic crossroads, this report sets out a course for the future of non-metropolitan England.

‘Non metropolitan England’ is an expression that captures the large and small towns, the villages and hamlets, the coastal communities and the rural and the deeply rural areas in which 62 per cent of the English population live. It refers to a diverse range of places with significant differences in their demographic make-up, geography and economy, populated by people that want to live fulfilled and successful lives and businesses that strive to prosper and grow.

The LGA has commissioned Dr Daniela Paddeu of the Centre for Transport and Society, University of the West of England, to carry out independent research to explore the role of local authorities in co-designing and implementing sustainable local freight solutions for the ‘last mile’ of parcel deliveries.
